Moving checklist: your guide to a stress-free move

Moving house is one of life's most stressful jobs. Break it into stages and it gets a lot more manageable — tick things off as you go.

Progress

0 / 20

Eight weeks to go

Get removal quotes and book a date (provisionally if not yet exchanged)
Start decluttering room by room
Tell your landlord, or check your notice period
Look at schools, GP surgeries and dentists near your new home

Four weeks to go

Confirm the removal firm once you've exchanged
Arrange buildings and contents insurance from the right date
Order packing boxes, tape and labels
Redirect your post with Royal Mail

One week to go

Tell your bank, employer, DVLA, HMRC and the council
Arrange final meter readings with utility suppliers
Defrost the freezer and use up food
Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, chargers, toilet roll, medicines

Moving day

Take meter readings and photos at both properties
Check every room, cupboard and the loft before leaving
Collect keys from the agent once completion is confirmed
Make the beds first — you'll thank yourself later

After the move

Register to vote at your new address
Update your address on every account and subscription
Find the stopcock, fuse box and boiler manual
Diarise your mortgage rate end date

Your ticks are saved in this browser only.
